Castel Nuovo (Maschio Angioino): history, what to see and why to stay at Binario Centrale
A tourist and historical guide to one of Naples’ landmarks, just a stone’s throw from our guesthouse
One of Naples’ most recognisable landmarks, overlooking the sea next to Piazza Municipio, is Castel Nuovo, commonly known as Maschio Angioino. Its five imposing cylindrical towers and the famous white marble triumphal arch make it a virtual must-see for anyone visiting the city, as well as one of the most photographed spots in the city centre.
In this article, we take a look at the history of the castle, what to see during your visit and why our guesthouse Binario Centrale is the ideal starting point for exploring it, along with the rest of the city.

The history of Castel Nuovo
The castle was commissioned by Charles I of Anjou, who, in 1279, after moving the capital of the Kingdom from Palermo to Naples, decided to build a new fortified royal residence overlooking the sea, both as a defence for the city and as a symbol of Angevin power. The work, supervised by the architect Pierre de Chaulnes, was completed relatively quickly by the standards of the time.
The name ‘Castel Nuovo’ was coined to distinguish it from the older fortifications already present in the city. It was not until the late nineteenth century that the Neapolitans began to refer to it informally as Maschio Angioino, combining the medieval term ‘mastio’ — which denoted a fortified structure with several towers — with a reference to the House of Anjou, which had such a profound influence on the political and cultural life of Naples at the time.
Over the centuries, the castle served as a royal residence, a venue for significant historical events and, later, a fortress under Aragonese rule, which strengthened its defences whilst maintaining its role as a cultural centre, hosting artists and writers.
What to see during your visit
The tour takes in some of the most evocative sites of medieval and Renaissance Naples:

The Hall of the Barons
The most impressive room in the castle, covered by a splendid octagonal vault, which takes its name from a famous episode involving a plot against the King of Aragon.

The Palatine Chapel
The only surviving part of the ancient Angevin palace, once decorated with frescoes by Giotto and his school depicting scenes from the Old and New Testaments.

The Civic Museum
Spread over several floors, it houses a collection ranging from 15th-century devotional works to 20th-century Neapolitan painting and sculpture.

The Triumphal Arch
The famous white marble entrance, a Renaissance masterpiece commemorating the arrival of Alfonso of Aragon in Naples.
For those who love the city’s lesser-known history, an underground archaeological trail has also been opened in recent years, taking visitors from the Roman ruins to the streets of Renaissance Naples.
