What you need to know about the Certosa di San Martino
The Certosa di San Martino, one of the most spectacular sites in Naples, is a former Carthusian monastery converted into a museum, perched on the Vomero hill next to Castel Sant’Elmo. It is famous both for its views over the Gulf and for its Baroque artistic heritage.
Why it is important
Founded in 1325 by the Angevins, it was expanded over the centuries to become one of the finest examples of Neapolitan Baroque.
Since 1866, it has housed the National Museum of San Martino, dedicated to the artistic and cultural history of Naples.
It is considered one of the city’s most beautiful vantage points. Many Neapolitans also see it as a ‘must-see’ spot to understand Naples from above.

Must-see attractions
The Great Cloister
The heart of the complex: quiet, monumental, with Baroque decorations and a view of Vesuvius.
The Cuciniello Nativity Scene
One of the world’s most famous collections of Neapolitan nativity scenes, featuring hundreds of 18th-century figures and dramatic day/night lighting.
The Baroque church
Richly adorned with marble, frescoes and works by artists such as Cosimo Fanzago and Jusepe de Ribera.
Practical tips for visiting the Certosa di San Martino
The Certosa di San Martino is one of the most popular attractions among visitors to Naples. Every year, thousands of tourists come specifically for this unique experience. The strategic location of the Binario Centrale, just a stone’s throw from the Central Station, means you can reach it easily in just a few minutes.
To make the most of your visit, we recommend booking in advance. Naples has an efficient public transport system that runs directly from the Central Station, which is very close to our guest house. You’ll be able to get around freely without needing a car.
If you really want to enjoy your visit to the Certosa di San Martino without any stress, there are a few tips that make all the difference.
- Plan your visit early in the morning or after lunch. The busiest times are between 10.30 am and 1 pm, when there are many tour groups and school trips.
- Allow at least two hours for your visit: the place may seem like ‘just a monastery’, but between the cloisters, the museum, the nativity scenes and the panoramic terraces, time flies.
- Wear comfortable shoes: the route through the Vomero district involves plenty of uphill and downhill sections and many internal staircases.
- Don’t miss the viewpoint: it offers one of the most beautiful views of Naples, especially in the soft light of late afternoon.
- The section on Neapolitan nativity scenes is well worth a visit even if you’re not a fan: the famous Cuciniello Nativity Scene is one of the highlights.
- If you can, visit Castel Sant’Elmo too: they’re practically right next to each other.
How to get there:
- The most pleasant option is the funicular to Vomero (either the Montesanto or the Centrale → Morghen line) followed by a scenic 10-minute walk.
- Alternatively, take Metro Line 1 to Vanvitelli and then walk.
Useful, up-to-date information:
- Generally open 08:30–17:00 with last admission at 16:00
- Closed on Wednesdays
- Full price ticket approx. €6
A tip with a distinctly Neapolitan flavour: after your visit, walk down towards the Spanish Quarter via ‘la Pedamentina’ or Via Palizzi. This route is a favourite even among locals, as it offers incredible views of the city.
