How do I get to Pompeii from Naples Central Station?
In this guide, we explain how to get to Pompeii easily, quickly and cheaply, directly from your local station.
Are you staying at Binario Centrale Guest House and want to visit the ruins of Pompeii? You’ve come to the right place — and the best place. Just a short walk from Naples Central Station, our guest house puts you right at the ideal starting point for visiting one of the world’s most famous archaeological sites.
The most convenient option: the Circumvesuviana
The Circumvesuviana train is the most popular way for tourists to get to Pompeii. It departs directly from the Central Station.
From Naples Central Station, follow the signs for Naples Porta Nolana Station or get off at the Piazza Garibaldi underground station (line 1 or 2), which is connected to the Circumvesuviana network.
Take the Circumvesuviana — the Naples–Sorrento line — and get off at Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri.
The journey takes about 35–40 minutes. Trains run approximately every 30 minutes. A single ticket costs around €2.80.
Once you’ve left the station, the entrance to the Pompeii archaeological site is less than a 5-minute walk away.

Alternative: Trenitalia (High-Speed + Regional)
If you prefer Trenitalia, you can take a regional train from Napoli Centrale to Pompei station (not Pompei Scavi). From there, the archaeological site is about 1.5 km away on foot or by taxi. This option is less direct but useful if you already have a Trenitalia season ticket.
Practical tips
Buy your Circumvesuviana ticket at the ticket offices or from the ticket machines at the station — tickets cannot be purchased on board.
Arrive at the archaeological site as soon as it opens (9.00 am) to avoid the queues and the heat during the middle of the day.
Bring water, comfortable shoes and sun cream with you — the site is almost entirely outdoors.
Book your ticket for the ruins online in advance: pompeiisites.org
On the return journey to Naples, Circumvesuviana trains run regularly until late in the evening.
